With their debut these Scots give the Viking- and Folk Metal scene a massive knock - also the current mini album offers the best of Scottish Pirate Metal.

Great fun!

The four tracks of this record really demonstrate the power that a niche sub-subgenre such as Pirate Metal can hold. I was sold by epic artwork alone, without even listening to a snippet of music. When the EP arrived, I was really unsurprised: I expected heavy, drunken fun, and got exactly that.
"Leviathan" is a great track, incredible to sing along to, and overall, what you'd expect from a battle song about a giant squid. "Wolves of the Sea" is one of the catchiest, silliest, cheesiest things I have ever heard, but it's so loveable, even if not great for moshing. "Wein und Weiber" is a German translation of their song "Wenches and Mead", from their debut "Captain Morgan's Revenge", and has exactly the same feel but with different lyrics. Finally, "Heavy Metal Pirates". This song is an early Alestorm track, written back when they were called Battleheart, but it still packs the same catchy punch as the rest of their discography.
I would recommend this album to any folk metal fan with a sense of humor; Alestorm is not to be taken seriously! They are serious musicians, but they certainly enjoy a bit of fun, and the semi-comedy feel really comes through on this EP.
An absolute 10/10 for me, but may not be to everyone's taste.

Storming Single From Scotland's Blackest Brigands' Second Album.

This CD-EP has four tracks. "Leviathan" and "Wolves And Sea" are on their second album, "Black Sails At Midnight". Any fans of Alestorm's unique brand of "Pirate Metal" should get this EP for the two bonus tracks which are not available elsewhere. The first of these is "Wein Und Weiber" (loosely translated as "Wine & Wenches" -not "mead", which would be "met" in German), which does exactly what it says on the tin. Not being a German speaker, I couldn't tell you what they actually sing about but it's fairly predictable: "Drink the wine and kiss the wenches" (maybe later: "Drink the wenches and kiss the wine"!!!) The second bonus track is "Heavy Metal Pirates", which is apparently one of the earliest songs written by the band, from which they got the idea to follow the "pirate metal" groove, so this is their "pirate treasure map", if you will! All in all, this is a cracking little EP which EMP have at a good price too so, whether you want a taster of Alestorm before taking the plunge (walking the plank?) and buying a whole album, or you are already a fan and just want everything they have ever committed to plastic, this is a must-have. Avast, me hearties and buy this EP and we'll send you a dead man's chest full of ham! Or don't and we'll keelhaul you and your parrot! You decide. My vote: yes please!

Fantastic EP

Alestorm are an epic folk metal band that infuse their music with Pirate themes, this works very well and gives them such a unique sound in the metal scene. Leviathan is a fantastic EP with some great tracks including "Wolves Of The Sea" and "Wenches and Mead" but all 4 tracks are very good overall and would be a great CD to get and listen to just to get an idea of who Alestorm are and what they're all about.
