EMP Editorial Team (03.04.2006)
They are a household name in America: their debut album sold some 3 million copies, they were nominated for several Grammies and toured with heroes, such as Black Sabbath and Metallica. In Europe, the response to their three records, “Godsmack“ (1998), “Awake“ (2000), “Faceless“ (2003), has been far less enthusiastic. Only by extensive touring, the formation around founding member and singer, Sully Erna managed to establish a better reputation outside of America, too, and made their fans wait for their fourth new album. “IV“ is an absolute killer album that appears like a perfect unit and that is produced very fat. The first single, “Speak“ is an absolute neck killer that will make every club burn. “IV” is a very variable album that features all trademarks of the band and that features several songs with absolute hit potential.

IV takes a more blues-rock approach as opposed to their normal metal approach. It delivers all the goods from the past albums plus a lot more variety of styles and feels toward the music.
Sully's lyrics are as strong as ever! He really shows his vocal talent on IV. Not only does Sully play drums, guitar, and sing vocals, he smokes with a harmonica which he clearly shows on "Shine Down." The lyrics fit the musical vibe very well, production values are just excellent. The bass drum hits harder, the guitars sound tighter, and the bass just rumbles.
Altogether this album gets a 5 star rating the producer of this album (just Sully in this one) put his time and effort into everything.
